Teñir con índigo * Indigo dyeing En el mundo de los Tintes Naturales, el índigo es de las cosas más fascinantes que existen. Sin embargo, dado que se emplea de forma diferente al resto de las materias colorantes, a pesar de las increíbles posibilidades que ofrece, se trata de una subdisciplina tintórea a la que no todo el mundo decide adentrarse. El indigo no solo proporciona bellos azules por los que es mundialmente valorado al tratarse de un color escaso en el mundo de los tintes naturales, sino que también nos permite conseguir colores como el verde, el negro y otros colores difíciles de obtener sin emplear mordientes tóxicos y contaminantes a los que incomprensiblemente aún recurren muchos “tintoreros naturales”.
For many dyers, indigo dyeing is one of the most fascinating things to do, despite that the differences of dyeing method regarding the vast majority of natural dyes, leads many people to not even flirt with this beautiful subdiscipline of the Natural Dyes. The fact is that it not only provides beautiful blues (very rare indeed in the world of natural dyes), but also allows us to get green(s), black(s) and other colors difficult to obtain without using toxic and pollutants mordants to which inexplicably still resort many “natural dyers”.
Pero la verdadera magia del índigo (cuyo colorante se extrae mediante procesos de fermentación) reside en el teñido, el cual no acontece en el interior del baño tintóreo (llamado tina por el tipo de recipiente tradicionalmente empleado) como cabría de esperar, sino al sacar las fibras del mismo y entrar en contacto con el aire, momento en que se produce el teñido propiamente dicho, produciéndose una transformación del color desde un verde amarillento durante la inmersión, pasando por verde durante la oxidación, para finalmente convertirse en azul. No es de extrañar que la magia del indigo haya llamado la atención de tantas de culturas, dotando al azul de tan importantes connotaciones simbólicas.
But the magic of indigo (whose dye power is extracted by means fermentation processes) resides in dyeing, which does not occur (as could be expected) into the vat, but when we take the fibers out of the vat and the índigo enters in contact with the air, moment when the real transformation of color occurs. A metamorphosis ranging from a yellowish green during the dive, to a green tones during the early stages of oxidation, to blue once the oxidation process is completed. It is not surprising that the indigo has drawn the attention of numerous cultures throughout the world, giving to blues so symbolic connotations.
